Parenting Programme

This course is a great way to understand the issues facing your children today.

We are running a 14 week Prevent parenting programme in association with the London boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea. The programme aims to improve parenting skills and awareness of the risks experienced by young people. The course will improve the confidence and skills of parents to recognise instances where they may need to seek support for vulnerable individuals among their family or friends.

The programme is based on the Race Equality Foundation’s ‘Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities’ parenting course, with specific reference to extremism in line with the objectives of the government’s Prevent strategy.

We will: support parents to understand their role in preventing vulnerable young people from getting involved in or supporting extremism; improve awareness of parents to issues that can contribute to a person’s vulnerability to extremism such as the conflict in Syria, crime, gangs, antisocial behaviour and social exclusion; improve parenting skills of parents from vulnerable communities; encourage better relationships between parents and children so that parents can fill the space where extremists, gang leaders and other negative influences try to operate; give parents more knowledge and boost their confidence so that they can provide an environment where the obligations of faith are understood as compatible with British values and where full participation in British society is encouraged; improve the understanding of parents of mainstream and community support services and structures available to help parents.

The programme will run for 14 weeks, with a three-hour session each week. The groups are led by experienced facilitators to encourage participants to share and discuss their particular concerns and issues. The sessions can be delivered in the language best suited to the participants. Childcare is available for participants and refreshments will be provided.
