The origins of the Somali Mentoring Scheme

The Somali Mentoring Scheme (SMS) was established in 2008 in response to the needs of children and young Somalis in the local and adjacent boroughs.

Somalis have under-achieved in education and employment due to many factors that have led to a lack of aspiration and application. These factors include language and cultural barriers, economic and social deprivation within their community and a lack of role models and support.

The benefits to young people of having study support, mentoring and a greater cultural awareness are well known.  Working with Somali young people, a similar scheme  in another area demonstrated a clear improvement in the educational performance of those who were on the scheme.

The aims and objectives of SMS

  • To provide study support and boost the academic performance of GCSE and A-Level students;
  • To raise students’ aspirations and buildtheir self-confidence through mentoring;
  • To encourage greater awareness of students’ own culture and the cultures of those around them.

The way in which SMS works

Providing Study Support – Improving Life Chances

Education is essential if young people are to fulfil their potential – and the SMS study support programme helps students to achieve that.

Volunteers with knowledge of the particular subject lead sessions throughout a two year period covering the key themes of each of the three core subjects.  The sessions focus on complementing the material which students have been taught in school rather than replacing or replicating it.  There is also a homework club and opportunities to spend time doing coursework with help and guidance at hand.

Raising Cultural Awareness

SMS also runs a programme of cultural activities which encourages young people to think about their own culture and of the cultures of those who live around them.

There is one activity every half-term.  The activities relate to core curriculum subjects and encourage co-operation and team-working with people of differing backgrounds.  The activities are also intended to promote sustained development and to provide access to activities which the students would not otherwise have the opportunity to engage in.
