Baraka’s Easter Holiday Workshops

3 April 2018

Baraka hosted another brilliant kids' writing and poetry workshop over the Easter holiday...

During the school Easter holidays, Baraka welcomed 20 children aged 10-15 from across Kensington and Chelsea to participate in the charity’s second free writing and poetry workshop.

The two hour session aimed to equip children with many of the skills needed to write skillfully and creatively, to express their thoughts and ideas and to write and then read out their own poems.

The first half of the workshop saw the children learn about the importance of words, and they were encouraged to think about different styles of writing and consider how they use language in daily life. The children heard about having an impact, writing with authority and writing as a vital life skill, indispensable across a range of jobs.

This children wrote their own article, advert or letter.

The second hour saw the children learn some of the key skills in writing poetry before setting about writing and then reading their own compositions. Each child wrote a unique piece and the styles and subjects varied greatly from haikus to acrostic poems.

Watch this space for some of the kids’ creative offerings and for news of future workshops.

The workshop was hosted by Baraka and led by writers from the West London website Urban Dandy
