Forever In Our Hearts

8 January 2020

Baraka members have created a leaf for the Grenfell community memorial mosaic.

This Winter, Baraka Community Association was honoured to be able to participate in the latest phase of the creation of the Grenfell Community Memorial Project.

The project sees the gradual creation of a mosaic in memorial to the 72 people who lost their lives in the June 2017 fire at Grenfell Tower. The mosaic is also a tribute to the actions of the community in response to the fire.

The words chosen to adorn the leaves summarise what the organisers and participants hope will be the true legacies of the fire and its aftermath: Love; Hope; Unity; Solidarity; Respect; Courage; Together; Grace; Change; Resilience; Future and Forever.

Over the Winter it was the turn of residents’ and community associations to contribute to making the mosaic. Local schools will work on the next phase of its development, with leaves being added on the 14th of each month. The final mosaic will be unveiled in June 2021 on the fourth anniversary of the fire.

Baraka would like to thank Acava¬†for the invitation to participate in this artistic project, it was a great opportunity for Baraka members, parents and staff to come together and participate in the creation of a fitting memorial. Thanks also to Acava’s co-organisers al Manaar Muslim Cultural Centre and the Kensington and Chelsea Foundation which funds the project.
